Having a Loved One Officiate Your Wedding? Here’s What You Should Know

One of the most meaningful choices a couple can make for their ceremony is having someone close to them — a sibling, lifelong friend, or even a parent — officiate their wedding. It’s a beautiful, personal touch that often brings deeper emotion and authenticity to the ceremony. After all, who knows your love story better than someone who’s lived it alongside you?

As a wedding photographer, I’ve witnessed many ceremonies officiated by loved ones, and they’re often incredibly moving. But because these officiants are typically not professionals, a few simple details can make a big difference in making the ceremony smooth, heartfelt, and photo-ready.

Here are three important tips to help you (and your chosen officiant) prepare for the big moment:

1. Make Sure There’s Professional Audio

Your vows, the laughter, and even a few happy tears — these are the moments you’ll want to hear again. That’s why it’s essential to make sure your officiant is connected to a professional audio setup, such as a lapel mic or handheld microphone provided by your DJ or videographer.

It might seem like a small detail, but clear audio ensures that your guests (and your video) capture every word of your ceremony, not just the front row!

2. Announce When Guests Should Sit or Stand

One of the most common things non-professional officiants forget? Cueing the guests.

It’s easy to get swept up in the emotion of the moment and forget to tell everyone when it’s time to be seated after the bride walks down the aisle. A quick, clear announcement like “You may be seated” goes a long way in making sure everyone is comfortable and in sync, and keeps the ceremony flowing naturally.

3. Step Aside for the First Kiss

This one’s for the photo books! One of the sweetest moments of the ceremony — your first kiss as a married couple — can sometimes get blocked by a well-meaning officiant standing directly behind you.

To keep the focus (and the camera) right where it belongs, remind your officiant to step slightly to the side just before announcing, “You may now kiss the bride!” Better yet, have your Maid of Honor or a trusted friend nearby to gently nudge them out of the way if needed.

Bonus Tip: Getting Ordained is Easy!

If your chosen officiant isn’t ordained yet — don’t worry! It’s a simple and legal process in most states, and the most popular option is through Universal Life Church.

At the end of the day, choosing someone meaningful to officiate your wedding adds a beautiful layer of love to your ceremony. With just a few preparations, you’ll ensure the moment is seamless, heartfelt, and truly unforgettable — for you, your guests, and your wedding photos.
